Provide some info on swim meets for new team members!

Tips for parents who are new to swim meets, including: 

  • Swimmer and volunteer check in procedure
  • What to bring (and what not to bring)

What to bring/ Not bring

✔️ Bring:

  • Team suit, cap, and extra goggles or straps! (Can be found on amazon)
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen + hat
  • Water bottle / electrolytes
  • Chairs or canopy for shade
  • Sharpie
  • games or activities to keep occupied between events
  • Healthy snacks (see below 👇)

❌ Avoid:

  • Glass containers
  • Valuables you can’t keep track of
  • Heavy meals right before races

🍎 Snack Ideas

Great options:

  • Oranges 🍊 (classic for a reason!)
  • Bananas 🍌
  • Granola bars
  • Bagels + peanut butter
  • Crackers / pretzels
  • String cheese or yogurt
  • Sandwiches for longer meets

Tip: Small snacks throughout > one big meal

⏱️ What to Expect (Typical Timeline)

Arrival (30–60 min early)

  • Set up your team area
  • Swimmer check-in
  • Volunteers report

Warm-Ups

  • Usually assigned by team
  • Important to loosen up and get a feel for the pool

Meet Starts

  • Events run in order (can be LONG!)
  • Listen for event calls or watch the board 
  • Turn on notifications in Swimtopia and/or Meet Mobile! *Not always accurate so be sure to listen for events being called out to double check

During the Meet

  • Swimmers check in at the clerk of the course bench before each race OR report directly to their lane assignments! 
  • Parents = cheerleaders + snack providers 😄

Breaks

  • Not typical for regular season meets 
  • Short halftime/intermission at Invitationals and County Championships before final races

End of Meet

  • Clean up team area
  • Clean up personal areas
  • Check for ribbons/awards. Most will be distributed on the pool deck at practices following the meets. Be sure to check in when you see the 'ribbon box' is on the pool deck!
